If you can answer yes to any of the questions above, you would have been in very high demand among several Edison Elementary School students clamoring to meet and speak with you during their recent Literacy Night....

In addition to the usual Scholastic Book Fair, reading to furry and friendly canine companions, and dinner together, Principal Jayne Okazaki and her staff team organized an engaging and lively Bingo game this year. Students were challenged to circulate through the cafeteria and interact with other students and guests asking them various questions so they could fill in a Bingo square with their signature. Instead of the typical across or down lines, the students needed to meet the challenge of filling out ALL 36 squares for a chance to win reading books of their choice.

Madrona Sixth Graders Become CEOs!

The ��ɫ�� Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation just completed a new Jr. CEO Program with 32 Madrona Middle School sixth graders. This initiative took place over seven weeks and introduced the students to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship including Cost Models, Food Prep Safety, Marketing and Customer Service. Each session featured dynamic instruction from ��ɫ�� area business and education leaders who brought valuable, real-world insights to the classroom. According to ��ɫ�� Area Chamber of Commerce President & CEO, Donna Duperron, "There are only five other chambers of commerce in California that coordinate a Jr. CEO program." ...

After visiting elected officials at City Hall to obtain a one-day selling permit, the students celebrated the end of their program by selling their products at the Chamber's Annual Expo. One young CEO, Elliete C., was pleased with her sales of screen printed book bags. "I think the element that this program taught us most is communication. I learned that it's all about how we present ourselves and if we are cheerful and can talk about how our product compares to the competition. I have been able to talk to adults in the city and here that I wouldn't normally talk to. I learned that little kids are capable of doing big things." Many of the students agreed that the program fit with several of the Portrait of a Graduate skills including innovation, fiscal responsibility and communication. Ariel R. said she had always been a crafty, creative person, but she had never believed she could sell her photography and artwork until she got into the CEO program. Now she wants to keep creating and sell her items to her friends and family for holiday gifts.
